Tomioka Silk Mill

◎Tomioka Silk Mill is a World Heritage Site, a National Treasure and a modern industrial heritage founded in Tomioka in 1872 (5th year of Meiji era) as Japan's first government operated model mechanized silk-reeling factory.
Don't miss late 19th century brick buildings such as the Silk-reeling Plant and East and West cocoon warehouses. Audioguides are also available.

Mayugayu Tajima-ya (silk soft ice cream, strach gruel)
Tajimaya (silk de rayaki)
◎The famous "Mayukomori" is a starch gruel confectionary of Tomioka, city of Tomioka Silk Mill, taking the shape of a cocon, noted product of Gunma prefecture, and made from especially refined arrowroot. "Silk de Rayaki" using Tomioka Silk is famous too.

◎Tomioka City prospered in sericulture. Products such as Oyaki (Japanese dumpling made of fermented buckwheat) using mulberry leaf powder are developped and sold inside this shop.

Otsuka-ya (Yaki-manju filled with mulberry leaf)
◎It is a store using a building buit in the Taisho era (1912-1926) in which you can feel a nostalgic atmosphere. "Japanese-style rolled omelette" using fresh eggs having just been directly collected from local farmhouses every morning is a noted product of this shop.
Special "yaki-manju" filled with mulberry leaves are also available and you can eat them inside the shop.
